Ballina
Ballina meaning ‘mouth of the great ford’ is situated on the estuary of the River Moy and is Mayo’s largest town with a population of over six and a half thousand people. The River Moy, one of the top salmon rivers in Europe, intersects the town. The Ridge Pool, in the centre of Ballina has become a tourist attraction and has been fished by many of the best anglers in the world. With river, sea and lake waters within easy reach it is easy to see why Ballina is known as an angling centre. Ballina also hosts the famous Street and Arts Festival, which is an annual event and one of the most popular in the country. A major tourist attraction is the ruins of Moyne Abbey and the Rosserk Friary, which dates from the 15th Century. Beleek Castle with it’s beautifull restaurant and outstanding menu should not be missed. Bursting with a rich variety of pubs, restaurants and nightclubs Ballina is well worth a visit!
